Webber: “I was helped by circumstances in passing Alonso twice in Singapore”

How long Mark Webber was able to pass Fernando Alonso twice in Singapore, he admitted it was more a matter of luck than skill.

Webber admitted that as good as those maneuvers seemed, the first was aided by the drop in tire performance and the second by Jaime Alguersuari.

“Recently, I've had a lot of company from Fernando on the track,” he told the BBC. “I overtook him twice in Singapore, once on lap 10, where he was having problems with the tyres. I managed to pass him in turn 15, after aiming for him in turn 14".

“The second time it seemed much more spectacular, because I passed him in the chicane, which is not a normal overtaking point. To be honest, he was blocked by the Toro Rosso in front of us. I didn't know who it was at the time, but it was Jaime Alguersuari and usually the Toro Rossos are the cars that give you space later than usual. Jaime slowed down Fernando and I was able to overtake."

“It was still a satisfying move, because I had the same tires as Fernando. If it hadn't been for Jaime, I would have taken more laps to pass him, waiting for his tires to deteriorate further."
