"The tires are still decisive"

The Red Bull driver takes half a second from teammate Vettel in FP2 in Valencia and warns his team of the need to think about the race and not just the fastest lap
Webber: “Frustrated by the pace of my Red Bull”

Mark Webber admitted he was frustrated with his result in FP2 of the European GP: the pace of his Red Bull in the long runs was not up to the best.

While Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time in the second practice session of the European Grand Prix, Webber finished ninth, half a second slower than his teammate. The Australian admitted that he had not interpreted the soft tires well and warned the team of the need to aim for a good pace for the race.

“We got one lap or at most two laps with the Option tyres, so we didn't do a good job with the soft compound”, Webber said. “It was a frustrating end to the session, but we have this evening to make up for it. I think the car works quite well here, but Seb was on pole in Montreal and we finished the race in fourth place: we need to import the car to do well on Sunday.".
When asked how the race pace seemed to him, the Red Bull driver appeared pessimistic. “It's not very good, but we know where we can improve. I think Seb had a reasonable long run, but we know what we need to do to improve.".

With the first seven riders closing in 0"4 and the first fifteen in 1", the Australian thinks everything depends on making the tires work correctly. “Nothing has changed since the last race. We have a lot of fast guys, who have the tires working as they should and are so very fast. So it all depends on those four black things that are on the corners of the car", he concluded jokingly.
