Webber: “It was a crazy and very tough race”
The Australian recovered 15 positions in Valencia: he is now second in the Drivers' World Championship
Mark Webber was among the great protagonists at the European GP. After starting in 19th place on the grid, the Australian from Red Bull climbed up to fourth place, taking advantage of an excellent tire strategy: he is now second in the Drivers' Championship, twenty points behind leader Alonso.
“It was another crazy day. As we are discovering, it is very different between qualifying and the race and no one knows what will happen on Sunday.", Webber said. “Obviously I was benefited by a few retirements, with a Lotus, Lewis Hamilton and Seb Vettel having to stop early. But it's all part of the championship and yesterday wasn't a great day for me: maybe if I had started at the front I wouldn't have had as good a race as I did starting from the back.”
Webber explained that strategy was the key to his result, along with his ability to not ruin the compounds too much to make it last longer than his rivals. “The strategy was to roll the dice and go on an adventure, trying to figure out what was happening.
I didn't mind the race, it wasn't too bad, a bit of KERS, a bit of DRS, a bit of overtaking here and there. But it's still really, really difficult. You can't really go fast because you're trying to save tires. In the end it's a race where I bring home a lot of points, so I'm happy to have obtained them from that position on the grid.", concluded the Red Bull standard bearer.
