Vettel: “It's possible to beat Schumacher's victory record”

The particular layout of the Montreal track could be a point against his dominance this weekend, but according to many insiders Sebastian Vettel is on track to get his second consecutive Formula 1 title.

According to Auto Motor und Sport magazine, the 23-year-old could even threaten Michael Schumacher's record for the number of victories in a single season.

The record dates back to 2004, when Schumacher dominated, winning 13 of the 18 races on the calendar, or 72%. If Vettel wins 8 of the remaining 13 races this year, his win percentage will be 73%.

“Nothing is impossible” declared the young German to those who asked him about the possibility of beating Schumacher's record. “It's certainly not impossible,” added Schumacher, “but I don't think Sebastian looks at the statistics but only at the final result.”

“If you look at Michael's records, some are really hard to beat. But I don't think about it. Every race is difficult, there are so many variables” added Vettel.

“There are no limits. Everything is possible” declared Rubens Barrichello.

“I think Ferrari's dominance of that period was particular. Red Bull is a little more dependent on the track and perhaps we will see an example of that here in Canada,” explained Nick Heidfeld.

“I think he can do it but McLaren in particular is a strong opponent,” added Heidfeld. “In recent years they have recovered towards the end of the season.”

For Jenson Button the record is possible for Vettel in 2011 “but let's hope it's not realistic. Our goal is to make sure that doesn't happen,” explained the McLaren driver. “Red Bull's pace in qualifying is incredible but their race pace isn't as strong as they would like. On tracks where you can overtake, like here where good races are always held, we can beat them."
