Ecclestone instead defended Pirelli

Vettel: “F1 should change the 'recipe' for tires”

World champion Sebastian Vettel has called on Pirelli to consider a radically different approach to F1 in its role as sole tire supplier.

The tire factor has been dominant so far this start to the season and the controversy reached its peak in Barcelona with the four-stop strategies.

After the criticism received, mainly from Red Bull and Mercedes, Pirelli announced that it will make changes to the tires starting from Canada but Lotus and Ferrari expressed their disappointment, supported by the FIA which reiterated that the changes must be aimed at safety of the tires and not to reduce consumption and pit stops.

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone expressed his support for Pirelli: “I asked Pirelli to produce tires that were not capable of covering 50% of a race, so as to have more pitstops,” he declared. “And that's what they did. Their task is very, very difficult due to the differences between the various circuits, temperatures, cars and driving styles."

World champion Sebastian Vettel has a completely opposite opinion: “It's not a question of considering changing a single ingredient in the recipe. It's more about changing the recipe itself."
