Double world champion Vettel, Whitmarsh agrees to take back the nickname "crash-kid"
Sebastian Vettel has become world champion for the second time and the nickname "crash-kid" given to him by Martin Whitmarsh of McLaren makes little sense after an impeccable season like 2011. This is the team's opinion Red Bull boss, Christian Horner, in reference to the nickname coined by his McLaren colleague last year, when Vettel was involved in several accidents on the track that slowed down his championship run.
A year later, Vettel has shown enviable consistency while Lewis Hamilton has been the protagonist of a season full of controversies and accidents.
“I think he should eat his words, don't you?” Horner told Spanish newspaper AS.
“I'll take them back,” Whitmarsh confirmed to the English press. “Sebastian has driven fantastically this year.”
But Whitmarsh also praised Adrian Newey: “I hope Sebastian drove a car designed very well by Adrian Newey without error. It was always clear that he had at his disposal a car capable of winning the title easily. I think the crash-kid moniker has been taken out of context. We were talking about a particular episode involving Jenson."
