Vettel still on pole: “The new rules have not affected Red Bull”

Sebastian Vettel reiterated that in his opinion the rule changes were overstated since they did not affect Red Bull's performance. Vettel also took pole position at the Formula 1 European GP in Valencia ahead of his teammate Mark Webber despite the fact that from this race the FIA no longer allows the change of engine maps between qualifying and the race.

“There's been a lot of chatter about it but we haven't really understood why,” said Vettel.

“We need to focus on what needs to be done here, that's all. We had a good qualifying, a good premise for the weekend, constantly improving and I felt much more comfortable with the car, this is the most important thing. It was nice to get the front row today, it's a good start for tomorrow, but it's a long race” explained the German.

According to Vettel there will be even more controversy when the ban on exhaust blowers is introduced at the British GP, but he reiterated that in his opinion it will not penalize Red Bull more than others.

“There has been a lot of controversy and it will be the same story even before Silverstone. We know what we are doing, it is certainly a step backwards but it is like this for everyone, for some more, for others less. For cars based on that concept, such as Mercedes or Renault, perhaps it will be more penalizing."

Vettel denied that he no longer feels emotion about winning pole position: “I think it's wrong to say something like that. It was a bit strange because I came back and concentrated on doing everything correctly and stopping the car, I was waiting for the call and I had to turn off the car, I didn't have much time. I just congratulated the team. It depends a bit on the moment, if you're on the track and have time to talk you have more time to celebrate. I knew on the second run that I was a little faster but not much, I wanted to save a lap on the tyres, I rejoined and I don't know, Mark improved, but I was already stopped at parc fermé and I didn't know it."

Mark Webber, second with the other Red Bull, said he never expected the team to be in trouble due to the new rules: “We've talked about it enough, we arrived here without expecting any difference. You write about it a lot, others talk about it a lot, maybe someone in our team is not very competent in technical aspects."
