A new controversy over exhausts in F1 already in Jerez?

Some teams already have solutions at the limit of the regulation

While the noses with the step continue to attract the attention of the fans, the experts are focused on the rear end of the new cars that debuted in Jerez yesterday. With blown diffusers banned for this season, the new rules require exhausts visible from above. But according to Auto Motor und Sport the solutions of Ferrari and McLaren are not always visible from a bird's eye view and according to some insiders there could be new controversies.

“We have had a lot of correspondence with the FIA and we are convinced that what we have is legal,” said Ferrari designer Nikolas Tombazis.

McLaren's solution is also innovative with the exhausts seen at the presentation of the MP4-27 still fitted in Jerez. The Woking team would find a way to redirect the exhaust air.

“There's always the possibility that someone comes in with something on the edge of the regulations,” said Red Bull's Adrian Newey.

James Allison, Lotus technical director, added: “For the moment we have a conservative solution. We will look at the competitors and what the FIA will say. It will depend on what is granted and we will act accordingly."

Frustration in small teams: “The FIA has declared that the exhausts should no longer have an aerodynamic influence and we support this thesis” declared Giorgio Ascanelli of Toro Rosso.

Williams' Mark Gillian added: "The rules are very clear at the moment and we are trying to follow them correctly."
