Toro Rosso, Sainz: “Verstappen's promotion was hard for me”

Carlos Sainz admitted he had a bad quarter of an hour when Red Bull chose Verstappen in his place. The two, practically on the ballot for a year, both aspired to the seat of the senior team, with the Dutchman winning the family derby by a margin.

The Spanish driver had to take the blow, but came out on top: the reaction was impressive, with many placings in the points and performances that were always of an absolute level. It was precisely Sainz's character and skill that pushed Red Bull to renew his contract, placing a significant veto on his move to Renault.

“Outwardly I tried to show that I was strong, but Verstappen's promotion to Red Bull was a hard blow for me - Sainz told Autosport - Everyone talked about Kvyat's difficult moment, but no one realized that it was a delicate moment for me too. Suddenly I had to react, showing Red Bull all my worth and at the same time I couldn't get behind Daniil. I had to deal with enormous pressure, because my entire F1 career was at stake. Barcelona was a turning point. My home race, with Verstappen in Red Bull and I had to be in front of my partner at all costs. Sixth place was a nice prize and from then on I gained confidence and serenity."
