Todt: “Renault threatens to withdraw if new engines are not introduced in F1”

Ferrari and Mercedes are pushing to postpone the rules on new F1 engines scheduled for 2013. The president of the FIA, Jean Todt, has admitted this.

It was recently learned that the new, more environmentally friendly 1600cc turbo four-cylinder no longer enjoys support from the four engine suppliers.

According to rumors, only Renault would be completely in favor of the new engines. The FIA announced on Friday that it will begin consultations with the teams and will then consider a new date for the implementation of the new rules later this month.

Todt admitted to Diario Sport that the situation is frustrating.

“They proposed the rules, and the FIA accepted them,” declared the Frenchman. “The proposal did not fall from the sky; there were 11 meetings with all representatives. When I spoke to Renault officials they told me that they will withdraw if the new engines are not introduced in 2013. When I spoke to Mercedes and Ferrari they asked me to delay the introduction by a couple of years. They are not against the rules but they want them to be postponed. So in the next few days I will continue to maintain contact personally to understand where we are” added Todt.
