Points-based superlicence in F1: proposal will be approved

The proposal to introduce points-based Super Licensing into F1 has been approved by the teams. The proposal will therefore only need to be ratified by the FIA World Council in June before becoming part of the 2014 rules.

Team managers met in Barcelona to discuss a penalty system for drivers similar to the points-based licence.

Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Williams and Lotus are against the proposal.

The system will give stewards the right to impose demerit points for infringements in the race.

The stewards will be free to choose the number of points to impose based on the infringement, but there will be a reference table to keep in mind: for example 3 points for causing a dangerous collision and one point for not maintaining the correct distance from the safety cars.

Any driver who scores 12 points within 12 months will be disqualified for one race.

The points will remain valid for 12 months, after which they will be reset.
