Sauber does not renew with the young driver Robin Frijns

Sauber has announced that it will not renew its current reserve driver Robin Frijns for next year.

The reigning Formula Renault 3.5 champion is the team's third driver since last winter, but the team has decided not to renew the contract with the 22-year-old driver.

Frijns, who scored a victory in this year's GP2, will not race at Monza this weekend and will not be present at the race with Sauber.

“I don't know what will happen now,” the driver told Autosport. “All I know is that I'll be sitting at home and everyone is in Monza.”

“I don't blame Sauber, they have to keep themselves alive as a team and I understand that.”

“Of course they have a great history with young drivers and giving them a chance in Formula 1.”

“But they also have a financial situation that everyone knows about, and that's something that's out of my reach.”

Frijns, who won three junior championships in succession with a single-seater (Formula BMW, Formula Renault Eurocup, Formula Renault 3.5) before this season, said his 2013 was very difficult to deal with.

“I've had a lot of problems this year,” he added. “It's annoying, but there's nothing I can do.”

“I helped Hilmer Motorsport achieve their first GP2 victory, a great achievement that I am proud of.”

“But other than that it's been a terrible year.”

“At the moment, we don't have a plan. The most important thing now is that I am free and can do what I want."

“I hope someone gives me a chance to show what I can do.”
