Rossi, we're back to talking about the future in F1
Valentino Rossi has not yet been discharged from hospital, but the hypothesis of his arrival in Formula 1 is already circulating after recovering from the accident that left him with a broken leg. Twenty-four hours before his crash during Friday's MotoGP free practice at Mugello, the thirty-one-year-old driver had admitted that he wanted to "explore the possibility" of driving a possible third Ferrari car in the F1 world championship.
Now the correspondent of the New York Times, Brad Supergeon, suggests that the break to recover from the injury could trigger in Rossi's mind the desire to move from two to four wheels.
“My first thought was 'Could this mean the end of his incredible dominance of motorcycles?' Regardless of his physical state, will he have motivation (to return)? Maybe now we will see Rossi test a Ferrari more frequently, as he already did a few months ago."
“Personally, I'd like to see someone try to do what only John Surtees has achieved: win a world championship on motorcycles and one in F1,” added Spurgeon.
Still in the wake of Rossi's fall, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said the Maranello team will help the Italian in all stages of his return to full fitness.
“At Ferrari we are all close to you in this difficult moment,” the executive said in a press release.
“We are sure that you will soon be back on track, even stronger than before. If during your recovery you feel like you want to ride four wheels, remember that the doors of Maranello are always open for you,” added Montezemolo.
