Rosberg and Hamilton happy with limits on radio communications in F1

Both hope to benefit from it

Rosberg and Hamilton happy with limits on radio communications in F1

The two Mercedes drivers, fighting each other for this year's F1 drivers' championship, are both happy with the limits imposed by the FIA on radio communications in the premier category. Starting from the Singapore GP, teams will no longer be able to provide information to drivers on the performance of the cars, including advice on the settings to adopt in the race.

“All the fans are cheering so I think it was the right thing to do,” Rosberg told Sky UK. “In my opinion it is certainly a good thing, because we return to purer races. So far we have done a lot of what the engineers said on the radio. Now it's all up to us to understand how to act" added Rosberg. “For the riders it will be a completely different challenge, we will have to make do on our own. I think the races could be much more interesting. We will go from 100% communication with the wall to 20%, so it's a big change."

Rosberg explained that he had tested the W05 in the simulator without radio communications and admitted that he had to remember many more details than before.

“But everything went well, it's the right way to proceed” added Rosberg. Lewis Hamilton was also satisfied: “I really like the idea. In a certain sense it will be more difficult to drive, things like engine strategy will not be immediate, how will we understand which one to adopt? It will be very important to always adopt the same strategy for the power unit (among the Mercedes drivers, ed.). On a couple of occasions Nico used a different strategy to mine and in those cases he had more or less power which could represent an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the case. So as long as there are no problems ok, we will have to manage the rest. I hope it's an advantage for me. I remember the karting days, we didn't have any data, so no one could see where I was fast, if I had done anything, any tricks I had used. So it's a step back in that direction. I really like the idea that we will have to do it ourselves,” added Hamilton.

Daniel Ricciardo joked about the consequences of the ban: "Without the engineers some drivers will find themselves going against the grain and going to the wall."
