Renault, Magnussen: “It is important to understand if the Halo helps in the event of a fire”

On the sidelines of Free Practice 2 of the Malaysian Grand Prix, the sixteenth round of the 2016 Formula One World Championship, Kevin Magnussen spoke again about the fire that broke out on his RS16 during Free Practice 1 yesterday morning. The Dane from Renault explained that he felt a lot of heat from the rear of the car and that he quickly exited before the boys at the pit wall alerted him. Magnussen also specified that with the Halo system it would have taken much longer to puncture the pilot in this type of condition.

Here are the words of Kevin Magnussen: “It all happened so quickly. Initially I felt a lot of heat in the car and for this reason I immediately jumped out. The guys on the board couldn't even warn me. I honestly don't know how it would have ended with the Halo system: in the current configuration I managed to leave the car in just a few seconds, while with the Halo it would have taken at least five more. We need to better analyze the merits of this device in the event of a fire."
