Red Bull, Newey realistic: “We can't compete for the title”
The British engineer believes in the new Renault/TAG-Heuer PU
Despite having promoted the new creature born in Milton Keynes, Adrian Newey does not believe that the Red Bull RB12 can battle with Mercedes and Ferrari for the final victory.
First of all, for the British designer, the reliability of the Renault engine (this year branded TAG-Heuer) will count, which has caused quite a few concerns in the recent past. Although on the power unit issue and the new engine project, he appears very optimistic: "Our engine supplier had a good winter. The gap with our competitors is still significant, but we can count on new people, a higher budget and a different approach. All of this should help close the gap, although it will take time“Newey said as quoted by Speed Week.
Newey, like Chris Horner, also points the finger at the rules currently in force in F1: “We are in the third year of these regulations, which in my opinion are very restrictive. I honestly don't expect a huge step forward, but we have learned some lessons from last year. We have made some changes to the car. We developed the car well last year and we want to progress in 2016 too".
