Red Bull, the new weapon is called DRD

During the Abu Dhabi tests for young drivers, Red Bull tested numerous new components. Antonio Felix da Costa brought the DRD (Drag Reduction Device) to the track, a new system that should guarantee better top speeds in a straight line.

This is not a new idea. Already in July, in free practice for the German GP, ​​Lotus debuted the system but never managed to bring it into the race. Mercedes also tried something similar during the young driver tests at Magny-Cours and regularly refined its system in free practice. Sauber also tested a similar system on the second day of testing in Abu Dhabi.

While the other teams have demonstrated that they have innovative ideas but struggle to put them into practice and exploit them in the race, Red Bull has so far successfully used most of the innovations tested and a use of the DRD already in Austin, this weekend for the US GP.

The images from Abu Dhabi do not clarify the functioning of the Red Bull device but it is probable that it is a solution that can also be used in 2013. The new regulation for next season, in fact, will prohibit solutions such as DDRS if used actively. DRD Red Bull, on the other hand, would be passive and therefore legal also in view of next season.
