Ferrari record, 2"4 for a pit stop
Prancing Horse mechanics very fast in China: rivals beaten by six tenths
Ferrari ended the Chinese GP badly but was the best team to make the tire changes. In the overall standings, he beat Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren by six tenths of a half at each stop.
Fernando Alonso used 20"2, 20"1 and 20"0 in his three stops and Felipe Massa also set similar times: the most relevant detail is given by the lifting of the car from the ground and its repositioning on the asphalt. According to the Spanish sports newspaper Marca, the Ferrari took just 2 seconds, which if confirmed would be the new record for pit stops in a race. Overall, the Cavallino mechanics, once proverbial in terms of speed and struggling with a negative season last year, have once again become the best in F4: although it didn't help the Ferrari drivers this time in Shanghai, an advantage of 1 ”1 overall earned in pit stops can make the difference in the race.
But the great thing is that these results were achieved with the new compressed air guns which are slower than last year's helium guns and which have a slower performance by about two tenths. Hypothetically, Ferrari could change tires in just over 2", gaining a second per stop: a potential that if the F2012 were to become competitive again, would give Fernando Alonso a clear advantage over his rivals. If you consider that two years ago in Singapore the Red Bull mechanics changed Sebastian Vettel's tires in 2"9, the change underway is clear. F1 is played on the edge of cents.
