Possible for F1 teams a third car to reach twenty single-seaters

To thicken the 2009 grid in the event of the Honda Racing F1 team not being sold, some teams could be invited to field a third single-seater. The entire Circus, which as a sign of optimism is awaiting a buyer for the Brackley team, could find itself able to field only the eighteen cars of the nine "surviving" teams, against the twenty foreseen in the agreements with the organizers and television broadcasters.

To remedy this eventuality, the Swiss magazine Motorsport Aktuell takes up the hypothesis that some teams could be urged to bring a third single-seater into the race, but not having the right to score championship points.

The last Grand Prix in which a Formula 1 team sent more than two cars onto the track was the 1985 Nurburgring race, when Renault entrusted one of its cars to Derek Warwick, Patrick Tambay and Francois Hesnault.
