Pirelli Video 3D: The Spa-Francorchamps circuit from the tire point of view

Spa-Francorchamps, in the heart of the Ardennes, is a favorite among drivers due to the unique challenges it offers. At 7,004 kilometres, it is by measure the longest circuit in the Formula One calendar, underlining its status as an epic track, a legacy of a bygone era. Corners like Eau Rouge and Blanchimont have entered grand prix legend, requiring the kind of commitment that pushes not only the drivers, but also the tires to the limit.

In addition to the very high speeds and G-forces, one of the great challenges of Spa-Francorchamps is the variability of the weather that characterizes the region. Due to the length of the circuit, similar in style to the old Nurburgring Nordschleife, the different microclimates mean that it can rain on one part of the track, while another is completely dry.
The two Pirelli compounds nominated for the race are the P Zero White medium and the P Zero Yellow soft - the same ones already used in the European and German Grands Prix - but historically it is likely that the wet and dry tires will also come into action in Belgium intermediates. IP Zero Blue intermediate, in particular, have already played a key role in some of the most recent races and their ability to respond in variable conditions could be at its best in Spa.
Spa-Francorchamps is one of the many circuits that Pirelli has not yet tested on, but it is one of the tracks that subjects the tires to the most vertical and lateral load of the entire season. The length of the lap also accentuates the gap in terms of time between the two compounds, which is likely to be over a second per lap, underlining the importance of a good strategy. However, tire wear is generally low, due to the low temperatures and the flowing nature of the track, with fewer sharp corners than most other circuits.
