Pirelli, Paul Hembery: “Probable one-stop strategy”
According to Pirelli, only one tire change is likely in the Russian GP
In Sochi, given Pirelli's use of softer compounds on what was expected to be a more abrasive asphalt, all the teams were ready for a tactic of two if not three pit stops. The average low temperatures and a track that turned out to be remarkably smooth and not very aggressive could instead upset the plans and "give us" a race with just one stop, as explained by the director of Pirelli Motorsport Paul Hembery.
“The riders lapped very little, so there remain several question marks on the best strategy to adopt – Hembery said – The teams tested the softer compound little, running little in free practice, and it is difficult to have a precise indication of the length of the race. However, many teams may choose a one-stop strategy given the low levels of tire wear and degradation. Perhaps the most used strategy will be to race with the supersoft tires until the eighteenth or twentieth lap and then switch to the soft tyres. Conversely, if it were warmer we could even see two stops."
