For Hamilton and the Ferrari Team Manager, a one-stop race is possible
In Montreal the degradation of the Pirelli tires seems low
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari team manager Massimo Rivola believe some teams may be able to execute a one-stop strategy at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Hamilton was fastest on Friday in Montreal, and felt the tires were holding up beyond a long run.
“Tire degradation could be a key factor, Ferrari seems to have good tire degradation, so they could only make one stop in the race, with the tires capable of doing over 30 laps,” Hamilton said.
Rivola agrees with Hamilton's assessment.
“I think it will be one of the key points of the race,” he said. “I don't know how many of us were convinced that just one stop would have been enough in Munich. Today we saw many long runs with the same sets of tires.”
“We saw [Sebastian] Vettel do 19 laps on the super softs, while remaining very consistent. We saw both Lotuses in FP1 doing a very solid 21 laps.”
“On paper it is true that just one pitstop in the race can be enough, but on Sunday the temperatures will be very different from the current ones. Probably with 15 degrees more in asphalt temperatures it could be a completely different scenario, so we will need to be ready to react depending on how it presents itself.”
Hamilton added that the super soft compound lasted longer than expected:
“I preferred these to be honest, even if the soft went a little faster. However there are only three or four tenths of a difference,” she said.
