For Berger and Piquet, Ferrari is right to favor Alonso

Two former F1 drivers have defended Ferrari's choice to favor Fernando Alonso in the race for the 1 F2010 world title. The Italian team has been criticized by the public and the media for ordering Felipe Massa to give way to Alonso at Hockenheim. Ferrari is also due to appear before the World Motor Sport Council next month.

According to Nelson Piquet Jr it is up to Massa to demonstrate that Ferrari should support him more.

“It's difficult for Massa, Alonso arrived in the team after him but he's faster” the Brazilian told the Istoe newspaper.

“But Ferrari will not miss the opportunity to give one of its drivers the chance to reduce the gap to the championship leaders,” added Piquet. “If Massa doesn't want it to happen, he will have to work to go faster and Alonso, there is nothing else he can do. If he had been ahead of Alonso in the championship, they wouldn't have asked him to let him pass” concluded the Brazilian.

Gerhard Berger is of the same opinion: “Let's not kid ourselves. Alonso is clearly the best driver in the team; it's their only chance to win the championship" we read in Auto Motor und Sport. “Montezemolo has signed him and will play his cards as long as possible”.
