New controls on the flexibility of the wings in Spa

At the next Belgian Grand Prix, the FIA will introduce new checks to verify the flexibility of the front wings of some cars, especially Red Bull and Ferrari.

McLaren and Mercedes have forwarded a complaint to the federation which has indeed found that a certain level of flexibility exists but which at the moment remains within the regulations. From Belgium the tests will be more stringent, article 3.17.8 of the technical regulations requires the FIA to introduce further tests on any part of the chassis which appears to be, or is suspected of, movement.

Current tests impose a pressure of 50 kg on the wing and tolerate a flexion of 10 millimeters, it is expected that the force applied to the parts will be increased.

Article 3.15 specifies that suspended parts of the car must be rigidly attached to the car and must remain immobile. Then it is added that: “..any construction designed to bridge the gap between the suspended part of the vehicle and the ground is prohibited in all circumstances”.

Webber, winner of the race in Budapest, commented on his opponents' complaints: “When people don't like what they see on the clock they have to justify their position in some way. We should never penalize the good and ingenious things that people achieve by doing good work, but sometimes it happens."
