New Ferrari F1 2016: rumors about the 667 project

Ferrari F1 2016 – The new Ferrari F1 for the 2016 world championship, project 667, will feature several innovations. The Cavallino engineers started from a blank sheet of paper despite the good results of the 2015 car. The objective is to catch and overtake Mercedes. The project of the new Ferrari F1, entrusted to Allison, Resta and Binotto, will therefore present many new features and will inherit few elements from the SF15-T. Let's analyze them together with our expert Cristiano Sponton.

Return to the push rod front suspension – After four years of pull rod front suspension, Ferrari will return to the push rod scheme: a choice dictated not only by aerodynamic needs but also by the need to lower the steering arm which will be aligned with the lower triangle, the latter with a tuning fork layout, similar to the 2015 Mercedes.

Short nose for the new Ferrari – The nose of the new 1 F2016 Ferrari will be at the limit of the technical regulations and very similar to that adopted by Toro Rosso in 2015. The nose will therefore be raised with a section for air passage between the support pylons and the wing, very wider than the old version. This solution will allow a greater flow of air in the bottom area and the possibility of generating more aerodynamic load at the front, finally balanced by a slim rear.

Ferrari 2016, internal combustion engine, MGU-K and gearbox: many changes – The new Ferrari will be slimmer at the rear. To achieve this objective, the Maranello technicians worked on different areas of the Power Unit. In addition to the new crankcase, the internal combustion engine will change in many other areas and will be different both in size and positioning compared to last year. The technicians led by Binotto tried to contain its dimensions to improve the flow of flows directed towards the rear of the car, useful for generating greater aerodynamic load. The intercooler, of the air/water type, will be placed in a new position, completely different than in the past and following the Mercedes philosophy, i.e. inside the chassis. The Ferrari engineers may have split the turbo/compressor unit, bringing the latter to the front of the internal combustion engine.

New position also for the MGU-K, completely redesigned. Together with Magneti Marelli, Ferrari has created a very compact motor generator in size which will guarantee slightly higher performance than last year. It will be positioned on the left side of the internal combustion unit, copying Mercedes and Honda. The gearbox will also be very innovative, narrow and compact to be able to bring a greater quantity of air to the upper part of the diffuser. A new version of the pull rod suspension will also be introduced to allow the new 1 Ferrari F2016 to further improve mechanical grip and traction when exiting slow corners.
