Nico Rosberg between past and future

"If I had been on the market, I would have been a really interesting choice for McLaren – and them for me." This is perhaps the most significant passage of the interview with Nico Rosberg, proposed from tomorrow on the German-language website Motorsport-total.com. The underlying story can be summed up in a few lines: the contract with Fernando Alonso was dissolved, the Woking team searched for a long time for a driver capable of partnering with their protégé Lewis Hamilton.

Weeks of recurring rumors, the most total uncertainty, but one name that recurs often and from the beginning, that of Keke's young son. The marriage with the Silver Arrows ultimately did not take place. It was owner Frank Williams who clarified any doubts, declaring that the driver was unsellable. Now that Nico has sworn his love to the Grove team for another two seasons, until 2009, the choice made by the scion of the Rosberg family appears even more the most heartfelt and correct one.

"They didn't want to give me up," declares the runner with the German passport, "this means they believe that with me they will be able to go high. I feel very comfortable here, I think we will be able to become strong". For the driver who stood out in GP2, then, the question of the transfer to Ron Dennis' court can be said to be definitively archived. No regrets, even for the possible economic conditions. "I'm a pretty economical person," he continues. "For now I've only allowed myself the camper, the car, things like that."

Words that sound strange for a boy who, thanks to the successes of his F1 world champion father, grew up without knowing any type of deprivation. But he shows that he puts professional achievement (in terms of success on the track) before accumulating money. So much so that if the relationship with the English team were to give the desired results, it is not certain that the relationship with Williams could turn into a relationship for life. We'll see.
