In 2013 the single-seaters will be slower

Creating a single-seater that is slower than the current ones: this is the objective that the FIA asked Patrick Head and Rory Byrne to pursue in defining the guidelines for the cars that will race in 2013.
The two coaches are laying the technical foundations which will be analyzed in January by Fota to begin establishing guidelines for the technical revolution that will take place between the two championships.
The single-seaters should have smaller wings and generate aerodynamic load by exploiting the ground effect: if this were to be the case, the ground effect would return to the circus after 31 years.
Patrik Head: “We were asked to define specifications that could be the basis for single-seaters that are no slower than 5 seconds per lap compared to today. We tried to identify guidelines that could achieve this objective. With the introduction of the turbo and the fuel limitations, the engines will be more efficient and the drivers will travel at maximum power for only 50% of the lap time, this will also lead to a 35% reduction in consumption”.
The aim is to facilitate overtaking and make the cars more difficult to drive to increase the spectacle on the track.
In 1998 the technical changes on single-seaters aimed to achieve the same results...
