Ferrari engines: problem identified

Ferrari is thinking of asking the FIA for permission to make changes to its engines to increase their reliability.
According to information from the German publication Auto Motor und Sport, the Maranello team has identified the cause of the recent failures of its units.

Apparently the problem - which could cost Fernando Alonso a loss of grid positions later in the season if he were to use more than eight engines - lies in the pneumatic valves.

According to the article, due to the new regulation, shorter stops do not allow the engines to cool down adequately.

The publication claims that if Ferrari can demonstrate to the FIA that the engine suffers from a reliability problem, the Federation could temporarily exempt it from the rule prohibiting engine adjustments and authorize it to make changes to its V8s.

However, the units that have already been used by Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa could not be modified.
