Mercedes: Zetsche defends the purchase of Brawn

Daimler president Dieter Zetsche wrote a letter in which he defended Mercedes' decision to buy Brawn and rename it Mercedes Grand Prix. A member of the German company's management said this week that amid the economic crisis and the defections of Honda, Toyota and BMW, Daimler should actually invest "in better marketing for its real (road) cars."

In a letter addressed to his colleagues, Zetsche states that it is Mercedes GP's plan to enjoy greater visibility in F1 by spending "less than 60 million euros" per season from 2011.

“This is approximately a quarter of our budget for the last few years,” read an excerpt of the letter published by Auto Motor und Sport.

Zetsche adds: “In the future we will be able to attract more attention to our brand at a significantly lower cost.”

However, in an article published in the Daily Telegraph and signed by Cristian Sylt and Caroline Reid, two experts in F1 finances, we read that in reality the new owners of Brawn will have to immediately spend 1 percent more in F50.
