Mercedes, Wolff: “Changing tyres? Only a question of safety"
Pirelli's decision to modify the tires is still relevant
La Mercedes agrees with Pirelli's decision to review the tyres, a decision which will come into force starting from the Canadian Grand Prix. The German team has shown that it suffers quite a bit from tire degradation, but the choice arises from a need for greater safety and is shared by the executive director Mercedes Toto Wolff.
“If you struggle with tyres, as we obviously do, you can't wait for the FIA to change the rules to your benefit. This is why Lotus and Ferrari don't want the tires to change.", he declared during an interview with Autosport.
“The only critical point is that of safety. We have seen tire delamination and none of us want to have any safety concerns. As long as the tires are safe enough, I'm sporting to say that we just have to think in terms of the car with the tires. Safety is my concern.", he continued.
“I think Pirelli just wants to make sure the tires don't cause any more delamination. The tires are a showcase for them from a performance but also safety point of view. They don't intend to help one team or another."he concluded.
