Mercedes will try the "megaphone" to improve the engine sound in Free Practice

Mercedes has been studying a solution to improve the sound of its F6 turbo V1 engine. Toto Wolff has revealed that one of the solutions proposed to increase the noise of the new power units is a sort of megaphone to be added to the exhaust.

Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault are studying solutions to improve the sound of the 2014 cars, which has so far been disappointing for most enthusiasts.

“Solutions range from a range of complex exhaust system solutions to a simple megaphone at the rear,” Wolff told the Kolner Express newspaper. “The megaphone is a parallel drain that opens at the end, with all the problems that can entail.”

Wolff would be concerned by the possible interruption of thermal and aerodynamic integration between the power unit and the current exhaust scheme. However, Wolff said that solutions to improve the sound of the Mercedes engine will be tested on the W05 in the Barcelona tests which will take place after the race.

But according to the German newspaper Bild, Mercedes will test the megaphone already in free practice on Friday morning and it is not yet clear whether or not it will be used in the race.
