Mercedes, Hamilton at risk of grid penalty in Belgium

Lewis Hamilton, plagued by reliability problems in the first races of the season, would probably have to pay the price between Spa and Monza.

The Englishman's car number 44 has in fact already reached five MGU-H and turbo units and - as per the regulations - from the sixth component onwards each change entails a five-place grid penalty. Mercedes is forced to replace the turbo and part of the hybrid on Lewis' car, because it is impossible for the Englishman to finish the entire season with five units, and the choice of replacement could fall on Spa or Monza, two circuits where can overtake and where the penalty on the grid can therefore be easily "amortised".

According to Autosport, the Brackley team would have chosen to have Hamilton race with a fresh engine already at Spa, in the Belgian GP, with Hamilton ready to serve the penalty on the grid.
