Mercedes GP, Brawn: “With the FIA we need to evaluate whether the DRS has been useful this season”
Mercedes GP Team Principal Ross Brawn wants the FIA to evaluate at the end of the season whether the drag reduction system (DRS) has been useful.
DRS was an additional element in making this year's Formula 1 season eventful, and allowed an increase in overtaking in almost every race.
However, Brawn wonders whether Pirelli's more aggressive approach would have generated a similar level of action without the need for DRS.
“It was difficult to judge its value because the influence of the DRS is not as great as the tire,” Brawn said.
“I think the tires are an important element. DRS, as far as we're concerned, was introduced to stop procession races, but I think at the end of the season with the FIA we should take a step back, look at where it hurt, look at where it contributed, and see what we achieved , and see if he achieved all his goals.”
Brawn is concerned that overtaking has been made too easy – and therefore devalued – by DRS, and wants to make sure fans appreciate this style of racing.
“We've had a couple of races this year where we wish there hadn't been DRS because we lost positions. Montreal was a good example,” she said.
“It's frustrating, but we need to understand from the fans, whether they think overtaking with DRS is exciting to watch or not, or whether they prefer a more difficult overtaking, so we can work on the tires and other factors.”
“So I think if we had maintained the consistency of the Bridgestone tyres, which have been very consistent in the past, DRS certainly would have been a very important requirement. It was less important because of the tyres.”
