McLaren: Perez, “Good for the whole team that we have two cars in the top ten”

The two McLaren drivers are convinced that they have done their utmost to place the two cars in the top ten on the starting grid for the Italian Grand Prix.

“We had a good practice session this morning, so we hoped we would have a good qualifying session. It's pleasing for the whole team that we got both cars into Q3. However, we were about three tenths slower than the guys in front of us. I think we did the best job we could with what we had today. Now, though, we're just thinking about tomorrow. I'm confident that we can recover some of the ground we lost today, but we need to put together a good strategy for the race. Our engineers are a great group of guys, so I'm confident we can do just that.”

“I didn't expect more from the car this afternoon, to be honest, and we showed just what it could do. My times and Checo's are very similar to each other. It's a bit of a shame, though, because, if we hadn't run in Q3, our options would have been a little more open for tomorrow's race. We will do our best tomorrow. I don't know exactly where we are in terms of race pace – it will be interesting to find out tomorrow – but the good thing is that I'm on the clean side of the grid, which could be an advantage as it's usually a bit chaotic down to the first corner here . All in all, I think we can certainly do something from ninth on the grid. Everyone is on quite similar strategies tomorrow, so we'll have to see if we'll be able to do our job in the race another way. The weather forecast for tomorrow looks a little changeable, too, and things could get very interesting if it rains during the race.”
