McLaren Mercedes: Hamilton optimistic after the first free practice in China

Lewis Hamilton appeared optimistic after the first free practice sessions for the Chinese Grand Prix. "From the moment I took to the track for the first time this morning, the car appeared well balanced and this allowed me to carry out my program without problems" explained the Englishman from McLaren Mercedes who dominated both sessions .

"We have made some changes to the car but it has improved more and more, as has the grip and balance. This is the best possible way to start every weekend and it gives me further confidence for the next groups: at the moment I really feel in a good position" added Hamilton, who is five points ahead of Felipe Massa in the drivers' world championship with two races to go and could therefore become world champion as early as this weekend.

His teammate, Heikki Kovalainen, was also optimistic, despite the 13th fastest time: "The circuit appeared surprisingly dirty and dusty in the morning but everything went well in both sessions. We were fast straight away, which is always encouraging , and we spent the two sessions just working on the balance. I'm totally focused on work for the next two races and today's result shows that we've started well. I'm looking forward to the rest of the weekend with confidence in which we can achieve another good result."
