McLaren, Magnussen confirms divorce: “With an email on my birthday”
McLaren advised Kevin via email that there would be no space for him in the future
Magnussen and McLaren, as reported here, will take different paths at the end of 2015. The young Danish driver confirmed the news of the split with Woking, releasing some interesting statements to the English website Motorsport. Magnussen already knew for some time that he would not continue with McLaren, as his goal is to race and this would not be possible with the current team. Kevin also revealed a curious detail; McLaren "torpedoed" him on his birthday. A cold email, not the best gift for a twenty-three year old, and a not exactly elegant move on the part of the Macca.
“I knew well that I wouldn't continue with McLaren, because I wanted to race and I would only have had a chance if one of Jenson or Fernando had retired, but that didn't happen. – explained Magnussen – I had the certainty when the term of the right of option that the team had towards me expired. I was waiting to hear from them for a while, then I received an email about a week later from Ron Dennis' personal assistant. There I immediately understood: it was written that there was nothing for me in the future. The email reached me on my birthday, but this is a detail, let's not raise unnecessary fuss."
Having effectively closed his adventure in McLaren, Kevin does not give up on his F1 dream, confirming that he is in contact with various teams for 2016: “The experience at McLaren had positive and negative sides; certainly this year it was difficult to stay in the pits and watch – added the pilot – Now I am in contact with some teams and the dialogue is continuing. I have some chance of returning to F1, which is my goal. The ambitions have not changed, I know that I can win races and I would like to become world champion"
