McLaren, Button: “We've made too many mistakes this year”
McLaren have made too many mistakes this year to be able to mount a serious title challenge to Red Bull Racing, Jenson Button believes.
With Sebastian Vettel on the verge of winning his second world title, Button feels his team failed to capitalize on the opportunities they had throughout the season to win more races.
“Seb has a great car and has done a perfect job with it,” Button said in Singapore. “When someone is in that form and the car is working like that and the team doesn't make mistakes, it's very difficult to beat when you don't have one of those aspects.”
“We have made too many mistakes this year, even when we had the performances. So that's something we're going to have to work on.”
“If you look at the last races, if everything had gone well we would have had the chance to really fight with Seb for the win. But we didn't do a good enough job. He did a great job this year, in the next races he will be world champion again."
Button also believes that Red Bull Racing has benefited from adequate resources, which is why the team has been able to maintain its form throughout the season – unlike Brawn GP in the year they won the world championship.
“They have resources that we never had,” Button said. “We weren't able to really develop the car throughout the year I won the championship. That's why we couldn't be consistent.”
“Red Bull, on the other hand, has the resources to continue developing the car. And their reliability has been amazing this year.”
“As for Monza, I had a bad start due to a clutch problem,” explained Button. “It's the first time this has happened this year, and that's why I lost so many places.”
