McLaren: Button predicts a spectacular race at Monza

Jenson Button predicts a 'spectacular' race at the Italian Grand Prix thanks to the use of DRS in two areas of the famous Monza track.

For the second time this year, the FIA will also test two independent DRS zones in one race at Monza – one along the main finish straight and the other between the second Lesmo and the Ascari chicane.

While it's not yet clear how effective DRS will be at Monza, Button thinks it will play a big enough role in providing an exciting race.

“For the second time this season, we will have two distinct DRS zones, with two overtaking opportunities,” said Button.

“The first zone will be interesting because it has always been a very difficult challenge to overtake under braking at Ascari – the track is quite narrow and it is a fast entry – so it will be very interesting to see how the DRS operates in that corner. We might see some very spectacular moves!”

“I think the most conventional overtaking opportunity will come from the second DRS zone, staying as close as possible in Parabolica, which is not easy, you will be able to activate the DRS on the finish straight, hoping to pass before the first corner.”

“DRS will be a very important asset for a following car, and could make the race really interesting in some way.”

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh also spoke about the possibility of seeing a race again in Monza with many cars in the wake that have made the history of the Brianza circuit.

“Maybe it's a little premature to talk about the return of an epic race to Monza, but I think the whole team is eager to see in Italy whether DRS will create some kind of exciting and unpredictable Grand Prix like the ones we witnessed when we were younger. young people,” he said.

For Lewis Hamilton, the most important thing this weekend is to return to the top step of the podium after some very frustrating recent races.

“Last year, I won at Spa and couldn't finish at Monza. For this year, I hope to reverse this sequence! I've already given in Belgium and I'm really looking forward to returning to Italy, a place where I spent a lot of time with karts: it's a country I love very much.”

“I'm quite optimistic. I have never won in Monza and I would like to get a good result this year. I'm particularly looking forward to qualifying, because I think the DRS will make a huge difference to our lap times, and I really want to get the most out of the car in qualifying – and then let's have a strong race, of course.
