Mclaren, Button: “The new tire regulation won't change the cards on the table”

Despite the great curiosity of all those involved in the new tire regulations proposed by Pirelli and approved by the FIA World Council, Jenson Button explained that the Strategy Group has missed a huge opportunity to restore unpredictability to the strategies and to make the races much more spectacular.

According to the current Mclaren driver, in fact, limiting the choice of teams to just three compounds will not help the drivers diversify their strategies. The 2008 World Champion explained that all the curiosities about this new rule will be swept away after the first Grand Prix of the season given that from China onwards, considering that all the teams will opt for the exact same choice, all the fans will no longer give much attention to this possibility granted by the FIA to the teams. The Englishman was aiming for greater freedom in the choice of tyres, leaving the teams completely free rein for the race weekends and for this very reason he considers this change to be a huge wasted opportunity on the part of the entire Formula One.

Here are the words of Jenson Button: “The new regulation written by Pirelli is a huge opportunity thrown away. Unless there are huge problems with a very specific compound, all the teams will use the exact same tires for all the events of the season, effectively nullifying the purpose for which this regulation was created. It was enough to give the teams free rein on the use of tyres, leaving the drivers free to choose the compounds most suited to their riding. By doing so we could appreciate rather singular choices, perhaps with races full of uncertainty. In my opinion we missed a huge opportunity."
