McLaren is evaluating four or five drivers for 2015

Lopez: “Alonso's return to Estonia wouldn't be a surprise”

Fernando Alonso's future continues to be a mystery. What seems certain is that the relationship between the Spaniard and Ferrari is now over and the parties are just waiting to overcome the contractual impasse to announce the divorce and Sebastian Vettel's arrival in red.

Both parties appear to be awaiting the other's announcement, an early termination by Ferrari could in fact cost Alonso a $50 million penalty. After leaving the presidency of Cavallino, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo admitted in an interview that Alonso will leave the team at the end of the season.

“Yes, Luca said something but I visited the Ferrari website every day and there was nothing written about it,” Alonso told the Focus newspaper.

According to rumors in the paddock, Ferrari's hiring of Sebastian Vettel would have surprised Alonso, forced to choose between McLaren-Honda or a sabbatical.

But a year in Lotus could be a solution for Alonso while waiting to move to Mercedes in 2016. According to the owner of the Enstone team, Gerard Lopez, it would not be a surprise.

“It wouldn't surprise me if Alonso returned to the wheel of a car from Enstone one day,” he revealed to Canal Plus.

McLaren has not yet chosen its driver pairing for 2015, leaving Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button also uncertain. “We are evaluating hundreds of drivers” joked Eric Bollier, McLaren team boss: “Honestly, four or five”.
