Cosworth could return to F1 thanks to Mosley and Ecclestone

Cosworth's possible return to F1 would have been facilitated by a deal brokered between Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone. In recent days there has been talk of the use of Cosworth V8s next year by USF1/USGPE - the possible new entry for 2010.

Late last year Cosworth won an FIA tender to supply a low-cost engine and transmission package from 2010.

To fund such a project, FIA president Max Mosley had to rally the support of F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone. According to the German publication Auto Motor und Sport to obtain Ecclestone's support, Mosley – who wants to reduce F1's dependence on the big car manufacturers – decided to support Ecclestone's proposal on the points system which was to award the title to the driver who won more Grands Prix.

In exchange for the FIA's support, Ecclestone promised to guarantee the viability of the Cosworth project.
