Kubica: moderately comforting news

The first news arrives from the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure regarding the conditions of Robert Kubica, victim of a serious accident this morning in the first round of the Ronde di Andora Rally.

The Polish pilot underwent surgery to reduce the fractures in his right leg, the bleeding that occurred and to stabilize his right hand, which was injured in the accident.

A statement released by the hospital and Kubica's manager, while the operation is still underway, reported that the internal bleeding mentioned has been reduced and that the amputation of the right hand has been averted. Furthermore, attempts are being made to recover its functionality, thanks to the intervention of Dr. Rossello, a Ligurian luminary in hand surgery. The operation will not end before the evening, when more precise information will be available.

Returning to the accident, from what emerged, a guard rail would have penetrated the car, which would have gone off the road due to the slippery ground and (we reiterate, it seems) a depression due to some tree roots or in any case some irregularity in the ground, wounding Robert in the right limbs. The intervention of firefighters equipped with shears was necessary to extract the pilot from the sheet metal in which he was stuck. The navigator, who remained unharmed, immediately got out of the car to call for help.

The car, a Skoda Fabia Super 2000, was seized for investigations. In particular, we will try to understand if the vehicle went off the road also due to mechanical failure.

Luckily, after a few hours of apprehension, the news seems to leave some more hope. We just have to wait for further developments on Robert's condition.
