Jenson Button: “The updates we introduced here in Spain were not enough”

Jenson Button has admitted that McLaren's upgrades are nowhere near enough for the team to close the gap on the teams ahead after a disappointing qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Although McLaren and Button had played down expectations for the developments introduced in Barcelona, the hope was to see the car at least in a good position in Q3.

Yet, while Sergio Perez obtained ninth position, Button will have to start from the seventh row.

“The tire pressures were too high, so I don't know if there was something wrong or if they were set wrong, but we're looking into it now,” Button said.

“Unfortunately the changes introduced were not enough to really challenge the cars in front,” said Button, “and they have all had upgrades so it will be very difficult for us to catch up.”

The English driver is at least comforted by Perez's performance.

“The good thing is Sergio's position which showed that we have made some progress, which is what we need and what we need to build the recovery on,” Button said.

But Perez was far from happy despite reaching Q3.

“Being in Q3 with a difficult car makes me feel good,” he said.

“As a driver in a winning team like McLaren I would like to be at the top.”
