Interview with Kubica: “The affection of the fans is a great help”

After the very bad Rally accident in Italy, Robert Kubica missed the start of the Formula 1 season. The Pole has undergone several surgeries and now the date of his return home is approaching where he will continue his rehabilitation program. Robert wanted to give an interview to thank all his fans.

Robert Kubica: “Hello everyone, here I am. I'm sorry for the delay in contacting you but I preferred to wait until I could finally give some positive news. First of all I would like to say a huge thank you to my fans for the truly incredible support after my accident in Italy in February. I have been literally inundated with letters and various gifts and items, and the flow doesn't seem to slow down. I also want to thank all the people in the world of F1 who in various ways have shown their concern for the difficult situation I am experiencing."

Robert, more than 10 weeks after your accident, how are you feeling?

Robert Kubica: “I'm starting to feel a lot better now. My recovery is going in the right direction: my shape and weight are improving day by day and as a result I will be leaving the Santa Corona hospital very soon."

When exactly will you leave the hospital?

Robert Kubica: “I don't have a specific date, but I hope to be able to go out in the next 10 days.”

Regarding your hand injury, how is your mobility now?

Robert Kubica: “The mobility of my hand is limited, but it is quite normal in this type of situation, because the arm muscles are very weak due to the long period of inactivity. Things are definitely improving day by day."

Can you tell us something about your rehabilitation program?

Robert Kubica: “As soon as I leave the hospital, I will go to my home in Munich for a short period of rest. Then I will move to Dr. Ceccarelli's facility in Italy where I will begin a deep rehabilitation and a light training program. We will switch between the two programs based on the speed of my recovery."

There has been an incredible reaction from the fans, how much has this helped your recovery?

Robert Kubica: “I have to admit it was amazing and, yes, it helped me a lot. I really didn't realize how many fans support me. I'm really amazed and I promise them that when I come back, I will give my best."

Have you been in regular contact with the team?

Robert Kubica: "Yes of course. Especially since the start of the season, I have been in contact with my engineers to find out what was happening on the race weekends. They sent me race reports so I could stay up to date and fully informed, as if I were on the track. I have also been in constant contact with Eric Boullier, keeping him updated on my general condition."

Have you watched all the races this year and what do you think of Lotus Renault GP's performance so far?

Robert Kubica: “Yes, I watched all the races and there is no doubt it was a solid start to the season. The potential of the car, which I noticed in the Valencia tests, seems confirmed. As usual, it is now important that development at Enstone continues to produce constant updates to maintain this level of performance. The guys have done a fantastic job with this car and I'm sure they will continue to improve it."

Finally, what message do you want to send to your fans in the world of F1?

Robert Kubica: “Well, continue to enjoy the spectacle of F1 even if I'm not there at the moment. For my part, I will try to use this experience to come back as strong as possible."

Kubica: third operation completed, rehabilitation will be very long

The third and final intervention on Robert Kubica ended today at Santa Corona di Pietra Ligure, a week and a half after the terrible accident in the Ronde di Andora Rally. The operation, conducted by Dr. Francesco Lanza, only affected the Polish pilot's elbow, and lasted several hours. Robert will remain in intensive care for a few days. These are the words of Dr. Lanza at the end of the operation: "The articular part of the humerus has been reconstructed. The elbow joint has been reconstructed satisfactorily, but the serious prognosis for the recovery of functionality remains. It's clear to expect limitations. It was a long operation because we had to reconstruct the entire elbow, which was seriously damaged in the accident."
