The blown exhaust ban could cost Red Bull dearly

Red Bull could lose several tenths per lap if the blown exhaust diffuser is banned after the Canadian F1 GP.

The Austrian team's engine supplier, Renault, had asked to postpone the ban until the end of the Montreal event because, due to the architecture of the engine, it would cause reliability problems.

Adrian Newey explained in Monaco that the Renault V8 emits exhaust gases even when the driver does not press the accelerator for a "cooling" function.

Reliability aside, according to Auto Motor un Sport claims that the drivability of the Renault engine will also be significantly affected by the ban.

According to rumors, the French 8-liter V2.4 was specifically designed to produce an aerodynamic effect when the driver does not press the accelerator pedal while other teams have struggled to find similar solutions.

“We lost several engines testing this solution,” confirmed Mercedes' Nobert Haug.

According to the German magazine, the ban could cost the Renault and Ferrari teams up to 8 tenths per lap.

Jean Todt, president of the FIA, was categorical: "This is a solution that represents an unnecessary consumption of fuel."
