Hellmund is now aiming for the return of the Mexican GP

The former organizer of this weekend's US F1 GP in Austin, Tavo Hellmund, now wants to bring the premier category back to Mexico. Hellmund has stepped down from Circuit of The Americas management but will be at the circuit this weekend and has several meetings scheduled.

“The sky is the limit,” he told the Austin American Statesman newspaper. “It could theoretically break any record for spectators at a GP” added Hellmund speaking of the possible return of the Mexican GP even if his friend Bernie Ecclestone recently ruled out this possibility.

“The problem is that the Mexico City circuit is obsolete,” said Ecclestone. “It should be fixed up a bit,” he added.

Hellmund plans to find between $60 million and $75 million for the modernization work. “The track needs tweaking, but there are so many right elements already present” he explained.

“I think it's really the right time. Nobody wants to miss the opportunity to have Mexican pilots.”

Sergio Perez will move to McLaren in 2013 and Esteban Gutierrez could take over the starting role at Sauber.
