Hamilton: “We knew about the possible engine problem”

Mercedes was aware before the start of the Australian Grand Prix that Lewis Hamilton's car was developing the problem that would force him to withdraw early from the first race of the Formula 1 season.

Mercedes motorsport director Toto Wolff said the team had already noticed the problem.

“We realized it had a problem and hoped that the system would somehow recover,” Wolff said.

“It was very unfortunate because he was on pole and deserved a different race.”

“It's a bit of a shame to start the season with a retirement, but that's racing.”

“We didn't understand whether the cylinder problem was due to a misfire or an electronic problem,” explained Wolff.

“There are huge positives to take from this weekend,” Hamilton said.

“We knew in advance that we might have a problem, but of course it's always a surprise and we do everything we can to try to avoid any problems.”

“There's a long road ahead, so I'll try to be positive and try to focus on the next race.”

Wolff said Hamilton handled the problem very well.

“He's in good spirits,” he said.

“With 18 more races to go there could be many more retirements of other drivers and for this reason he is OK. “
