On the third lap Alonso also overtook Rosberg in fourth position while Hamilton unsuccessfully attacked Vettel, who was struggling in the wet.
The duel was repeated on the following lap but the German maintained his position. Error for Alonso who ended up very wide while attacking Button. The Spaniard returned to the track again behind Rosberg in fifth position while Schumacher was also overtaken by Massa and Webber.

On the fifth lap Hamilton overtook Vettel, who went wide at the second corner, taking the lead. Another mistake for Alonso, who went wide at turn 12 on the sixth lap. The Spaniard rejoined the track behind his teammate who he then overtook on the next lap.

On the eighth lap Massa ended up spinning at turn 2, slightly touching the barriers with his rear wing. On lap nine Alonso regained fourth position from Rosberg while Hamilton increased his lead over Vettel to 5 seconds. Meanwhile, Massa found himself in ninth position after the spin. On lap 3 Alonso started putting in fast laps while Webber was the first to risk dry tires on lap 10, imitated by Massa, Petrov and Barrichello.

Button chose to rejoin on the next lap leaving third position to Alonso. Stop also for Di Resta in seventh position. Hamilton changed tires on lap 12, as did Vettel, Alonso and Rosberg. Michael Schumacher then found himself leading the race ahead of Hamilton. The German then returned to the pits shortly after and the Englishman returned to being the leader of the race. On lap 14 Button attacked and overtook Vettel in third place while Webber overtook Alonso in fourth place. Behind the Spaniard Rosberg, Di Resta and Schumacher. On lap 15 Webber ran wide but managed to maintain his position. Trulli retired on lap 21 due to hydraulic problems.

On lap 25 after the second stop Heidfeld was forced to retire after his Renault literally caught fire due to problems with the front exhausts. The pilot had to jump out of the cockpit in a hurry while the stewards intervened with fire extinguishers. Shortly afterwards several drivers including Webber, Alonso, Massa, Hamilton and Schumacher took advantage of the opportunity to complete the second stop.

Button, who took the lead momentarily ahead of Vettel, stopped on lap 27, imitated shortly afterwards by Rosberg and Di Resta. Hamilton managed to get back into the lead after Vettel's stop on lap 28 while Schumacher retired after spinning due to a gearbox problem.

On lap 30 Massa overtook Rosberg in seventh place. Shortly afterwards Perez was penalized with a drive-through penalty for overtaking under yellow flags. On lap 34 Massa also overtook Kobayashi in sixth place. The Japanese, on prime tyres, then chose to pit on the next lap.

On lap 37, a new stop for Alonso who once again fitted supersoft tires and returned to the track in fifth position. On lap 38, the Spaniard set the fastest lap in 1.24.718, taking almost 4 seconds off Webber. The Australian responded by stopping in the pits and putting on prime tires while Alonso overtook him in fourth place

On lap 40 it was Hamilton's turn to complete the third stop still using supersoft tyres. Shortly afterwards Massa and Vettel also stopped. The Brazilian mounted supersoft tires while Vettel chose softs like his teammate.

After the lead drivers stopped, Alonso managed to move up to third position ahead of Vettel. On lap 42 Button also stops but has put on prime tires like the Red Bulls. On lap 43 Massa overtook Alguersuari in seventh place.

On lap 45 Vettel easily overtook Alonso at the end of the straight in third place. On lap 47, light rain returned and Hamilton spun at the chicane. The Englishman resumed the race after a complete 360 ​​degrees while some lapped cars arrived and his teammate Button overtook him to gain the lead of the race.

On lap 48 Alonso stopped to put on soft tires and returned to the track in fifth place behind Webber while Massa passed Rosberg. The rain became more intense and on lap 50 Button ended up wide at the second corner, Hamilton took advantage of this to take the lead again. Vettel also made an error at the same point.

But Button responded to Hamilton by overtaking him at the end of the straight but Hamilton overtook him once again! Meanwhile, D'Ambrosio ended up sensationally spinning in the pit lane.

Webber and Rosberg stopped to put on intermediates, as did Hamilton on lap 52, but the intensity of the rain dropped and Webber stopped two laps later to put on prime tyres. Meanwhile, Alonso attacked and overtook Hamilton on lap 54 in third position while Massa moved up to fifth. Hamilton was also forced to stop to fit soft tires and was later punished with a drive-through for the dangerous maneuver during the pitstop.

The Englishman returned to the track in sixth position also behind Massa, fourth, and Webber, fifth.

On lap 58 Webber easily overtook Massa in fourth place. The Brazilian was then easily overtaken by Hamilton while Alonso spun but recovered. On lap 59, fourth stop for Massa to put on prime tires while Button increased his lead over Vettel to over seven seconds. Kovalainen also retired on lap 60. Great fight from eighth to 14th position between Buemi, Rosberg, Kobayashi, Alguersuari, Petrov, Barrichello and Sutil.

On lap 64, Hamilton, taking advantage of the presence of lapped drivers, managed to overtake Webber in fourth place. Positions unchanged at the end with Webber who got close but was unable to overtake the Englishman. Button then went on to win the race ahead of Vettel and Alonso.
