After the first installation lap, all the drivers returned to the pits for the usual telemetry checks. The two Caterhams started running continuously straight away while Vettel began a 6-lap run with plenty of fuel on board.

Ferrari's program was different as it chose not to run in the first half hour.

Raikkonen set the provisional best time after the first 15 minutes, lapping in 1.22.717.

Grosjean then did better, lapping in 1.22.345, trailing Perez by two tenths.

After the first 25 minutes, on his second lap with the new medium tyre, Hamilton lapped in 1.22.266 to take the lead in the standings.
