Hungarian GP, Free Practice 1: Hamilton ahead of Vettel and Alonso

Best time for Lewis Hamilton (McLaren Mercedes) in the first free practice session on Friday of the Hungarian Formula 1 GP. The winner of the Nurburgring started the Hungarian weekend in the best possible way by setting the best time in 1.23.350 and preceding Sebastian Vettel ( Red Bull Racing) and Fernando Alonso (Ferrari).

Fourth and fifth times, respectively, for Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) and Jenson Button (McLaren) while Felipe Massa with the other Ferrari was sixth.

In the first half hour only Nico Hulkenberg with Force India set a timed lap, beaten shortly afterwards by Buemi in 1.27.058. Of note is a small fire on Alonso's car after the first installation laps. Then it was Button's turn to take the lead of the standings after the first 30 minutes with 1.25.697. The Spaniard from Ferrari responded with 1.24.179 while Hamilton and Massa entered behind him.

The Ferrari driver further improved his time, trailing the Englishman by 6 tenths while Webber shortly afterwards moved to 24 thousandths of a second from the top.

After the first 45 minutes Vettel took the lead with 1.23.968. The German continued to push but made a couple of mistakes and was unable to improve.

20 minutes from the end Webber was involved in an accident: the Australian ran wide on the curbs and his Red Bull ended up spinning and then hitting the barriers with its nose. Webber still managed to return to the pits. Shortly afterwards Hamilton took the lead with 1.23.350.

In the final, no one managed to improve their times. The Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher finished in seventh and eighth place ahead of Sergio Perez's Sauber and Vitaly Petrov's Renault. Bruno Senna lapped for Renault in place of Nick Heidfeld in the morning, setting the 15th fastest time.
